  • Bongeunsa Station (line 9, exit 1). Go straight & turn right to the temple. 3 mins walk.

Bongeunsa Temple, built in 794 CE has a long history of over 1,200 years. It was the largest temple in Seoul during Joseon Dynasty.

The temple offers two temple-stay programs (1 and 2 days), allowing visitors to experience Buddhist tradition through monastic daily life to purify the mind and body.

Other programs available at Bongeunsa Temple for participation include:

  • Yebook - A ceremony paying respect to Sakyamuni Buddha.

  • Temple tour.

  • Cham-Seon - Seon meditation.

  • Balwoogongyang - Monastic meal.

  • Da-Seon - Tea ceremony.

  • Ulyeok - Communal work.

  • 108 Prostrations.

  • Sagyeong - Copying Sutras

  • Salt Mandala - Filling up patterns using colourful salt

  • Korean Traditional Culture Experience - Learning traditional culture such as Lotus Flower Lantern Making, Ingyeong (Wood block printing from the Tripitaka Koreana), Making Temple food, etc.

Every May during Buddha's birthday on the April 8 of Lunar Calendar, Bongeunsa holds the annual Lotus Lantern Festival with spectacular sight of colourful lanterns.
