Historical Background

Located in Gyeonggi Province, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was built over 2 years and 9 months (January 1794 - September 1796) by King Jeongjo (1752-1800) of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) for defensive purposes and relocation of his father's (Crown Prince Jangheon/Sado) tomb to Hwaseong, near Suwon.

Though many parts of the fortress were damaged during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945) and Korean War (1950-53), they are repaired and restored based on Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe (The Construction Records of Hwaseong Fortress) since 1975.

The restored Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 12 December 1997 for its historical value and architecture excellence.
