Starbucks Kyungdong 1960 is located in the traditional Gyeongdong Market in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. It has become a popular hot spot since its official opening on 16 December 2022.
The coffeehouse is remodelled from an abandoned theatre originally built in the 1960s but closed in 1994. Spanning across across 2 floors (3F & 4F) of Gyeongdong Market, Starbucks Kyungdong 1960 occupies a massive 805sqm with 200 seats.
💡As a 'Starbucks Community Store', Starbucks Kyungdong 1960 will donate ₩300 for every item sold. The fund will contribute to improve the infrastructure, local job creation and revitalize the long-standing heritage of Gyeongdong Market.

Getting to Starbucks Kyungdong 1960 in Gyeongdong Market
The shortest route to Starbucks Kyungdong 1960 is from Jegidong Station (line 1, exit 2). Go straight after station's exit and turn left to road, Gosanja-ro (after passing 3 small streets). Walk straight until you reach Gate 4 of Gyeongdong Market (Gwangseong Shopping Mall) 경동시장 (광성상가) on your right. 6 mins walk.
💡Cheongnyangni Station (line 1, exit 1) is possible too with a slightly longer walk of 8 mins.
When you enter Gate 4 of Gyeongdong Market, you will see a staircase on your right. Go up the stairs. Directly at the top of the stairs is Korean Ginseng Wholesale Center 고려인삼도매센터 and on its left is a big green-white signboard.
Turn left at the top of the stairs and enter the door located just next to the stairs on your left. This is the first door to Starbucks Kyungdong 1960 (and Geumseong Radio Refresh Center by LG Electronics).

When you enter the first door, you have not reached Starbucks Kyungdong 1960 yet...
Instead, you will come to Geumseong Radio Refresh Center 금성전파사 새로고침 센터, a space collaborated with LG Electronics to heal and refresh the minds of visitors in a lively retro atmosphere.
There is an exhibition zone where you can see old models of home appliances (e.g. TVs, radios, washing machines, refrigerators) produced by GoldStar in the 1960s.
💡GoldStar is the predecessor (/old name) of LG Electronics.
💡Geumseong comes from the word, GoldStar pronounced in Korean (金星 in Chinese).
💡GoldStar is also the producer of the first radio in Korea.
💡and if you are wondering... Lucky Chemical is the predecessor of LG Chem. In 1983, the name of the group was changed to Lucky Goldstar; and shortened to LG in 1995 with the tagline "Life's Good".
Visitors can enjoy a series of games, events and hands-on experiences like bracelets making, iron-on stickers and potting up a plant at Geumseong Radio Refresh Center.

From Geumseong Radio Refresh Center, you will see the second door to finally enter Starbucks Kyungdong 1960. This double-door entrance is preserved from the original structure.
Once you walk passed the second door, the grand entrance is similar to entering a movie theatre leading up to the center of the coffeehouse with the counter serving as the main stage.
a) Unique Designs & Features
The high wooden ceiling of the old Gyeongdong Theatre is also preserved with an impressive and colourful artwork that liven up the space.
On the left of the counter is a small stage where regular performances by local artists are held. Also, orders ready for collection are projected on the wall, together with the order numbers and creative nicknames given by customers. For those who prefer to use your own tumbler, there is even a tumbler washing machine!

All seats are facing forward the counter as through watching a movie in a theatre.
