Dongbaek Island (Dongbaek-seom) used to be an island but is now part of the mainland. Many camellia (Dongbaek in Korean) and pine trees thrive on this island to create a dense forest.
At the top central part of the island is a statue and a monument of Choe Chi-Won, a scholar and writer during the Shilla Kingdom. Going further near the tip of the island facing the sea is the APEC House built for the 2005 APEC Summit. The walking path also leads to the popular 2.5m high mermaid statue and offers picturesque views of Haeundae Beach.
The statue of the mermaid is about the sad legend of Princess Hwangok (Topaz) whom came across the sea to marry King Eunhye. Princess Hwangok suffered from homesickness and used to comfort her sorrows by looking into the topaz where her fatherland was reflected at each full moon.
