Samcheongdong is home to distinctive European-style cafes, famous restaurants, chic galleries, renowned art museums and trendy shops in Seoul. It has an enchanting combination of traditional Korean hanok houses and trendy modern buildings where you can leisurely explore along the beautiful ginkgo tree-lined road.

Getting Around Samcheondong

Samcheongdong is a fairly 'long and lean' district that can primarily divided into 3 main sections.

a) 3 Main Popular Sections of Samcheongdong

Samcheongdong Gallery Street (Bukchon-ro 5-gil) - This is the lower section along Bukchon-ro 5-gil nearer to Anguk Station (line 3, exit 1), Gyeongbokgung Palace & National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul.

Samcheongdong Cafe Street (Samcheong-ro) - This is the mid section stretching along the long main road, Samcheong-ro and where the most popular restaurant, Samcheongdong Sujebi is located.

Samcheong Park - The park is located at the furthest end of Samcheong-ro main road and Bukchon-ro intersection.

b) Bus Jongno 11​​​​ along Samcheong-ro Main Road

You can enjoy leisure walk along Samcheongdong streets and alleys. However, if required, you can also hop on/off Bus Jongno 11 operating along Samcheong-ro.
 

The bus runs along Samcheong-ro (from Samcheong Park till the side of Gyeongbokgung Palace) in SamcheongdongSejong-daero (Gwanghwamun Square), stopping at Gwanghwamun Station, City Hall Station (Deoksugung Palace, Seoul Plaza) and Seoul Station in about 25 mins. Likewise, you can take the bus in the reverse direction from Seoul Station all the way to its last stop at Samcheong Park too.

There are 2 clusters of cafes and restaurants at Samcheongdong. 1 cluster is located along Samcheong-ro main road, the other cluster is located near Gyeongbokgung Palace, along Bukchon-ro 5-gil near National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and nearer to Anguk Station (line 3, exit 1).

Samcheongdong Sujebi is the must-eat for many visitors to Samcheongdong. This is also the most popular restaurant in the area with constant queue outside the restaurant. Samcheongdong Sujebi is featured in Michelin Guide in 2017-2018 and 2020-2025.

The restaurant has a simple menu with the most ordered dish, Sujebi, a traditional Korean noodle soup with hand-pulled/torn noodles. Makgeolli (Korean rice wine) is served in traditional bowls and their potato pancakes are well-received too.

Samcheong Bingsu is located across the road, 2 mins walk from Churro 101 Samcheong Branch. This is a popular bingsu (shaved ice) hanok-style cafe with panoramic street view. You can enjoy shaved ice in a variety of favours from Traditional, Green Tea, Black Sesame, Strawberry, Mango, Raspberry, Purple Sweet Potato, Coffee to Grapefruit.

Cafe Jinsun is ideally located just next to Gyeongbokgung Palace, overlooking the intersection of Samcheong-ro and Cheongwadae-ro. It is a great place to chill and take a break from your sightseeing and people watch at the cafe.

The spacious cafe includes an outdoor garden terrace, nicely decorated indoor section with plants and paintings, art gallery and small terrace on the 2F and rooftop on the 3F. Their menu includes cakes, pecan pies, waffle with ice-cream, panini, pizzas, oven baked camembert cheese with honey, wine, cocktail, beer and drinks.

Hwangsaengga Kalguksu is a famous restaurant listed in Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand yearly since 2017. It is located next to Blue Bottle Samcheong Cafe, 4 mins walk from Gyeongbokgung Palace's side gate or 10 mins walk from Anguk Station (exit 1). The restaurant is famous for its handmade noodles and dumplings. Other menu items include cold soybean noodle soup (summer only), hot pot with mushrooms, pancakes and sliced boiled pork/beef with kimchi wraps.

💡You can expect quite a queue at this popular restaurant. Thankfully, the restaurant provides proper seats for people in the queue (i.e. sit in the order of your arrival). Generally, the queue moved fast as the restaurant has 2 floors and you can take a well-deserved break from your sightseeing too.

Dot Blanket Samcheong Hanok Branch is a popular cafe that offers all day brunch from salad, sandwich, snacks, wine, beer, cocktail and drinks.

There is another Dot Blanket Anguk Branch along Yunposun-gil near Anguk Station (line 3, exit 1, 2 mins walk). Comparatively, Dot Blanket Samcheong Hanok Branch is bigger and set in a beautiful hanok.

Located towards the end of Samcheongdong main road, Samcheong-ro and Bukchon-ro intersection is Samcheong Park. Besides the Forest Library, Outdoor Children's Experience Park and nice-looking restrooms, the park is the gateway to Bugaksan Mountain, Seoul City Wall (also known as Hanyangdoseong), Malbawi Rock and Malbawi Observatory.

💡Bus Jongno 11 stops at bus stop, 'Samcheong Park Intersection • Okhojeong Pavilion Site 삼청공원삼거리 • 옥호정터'. From there, it is a 3 mins walk to Samcheong Park Entrance. You can hop on the bus from Seoul Station, City Hall Station, Gwanghwamun Station or along Samcheong-ro main road of Samcheongdong.

Samcheong Park Ringway Walkway is a 2.5km circular scenic walking trail that leads back to Samcheong Park. Alternatively, you can explore the hiking trail along Seoul City Wall that leads to Naksan Park/Dongdaemun (via Hyehwamun Gate & Heunginjimun Gate) on one side or Inwangsan Mountain (via Sukjeongmun Gate & Changuimun Gate) on the other side.

Samcheongdong is located within easy walking distance to many popular, cultural and historical attractions in Seoul. You can leisurely spend 1-2 days to explore the surrounding areas and enjoy the many famous cafes/restaurants in the vicinity too.

Shortcut to Bukchon Hanok Village

From Samcheong-ro main road, you can continue on to Bukchon Hanok Village:

1. Take the stairs nearest to the pedestrian crossing just across the road from Samcheongdong Sujebi (restaurant).

2. Follow the path and take the 2nd left turn up the slope and stairs. (Note: you can take the shorter 1st left turn all the way up the stairs too. 2nd left turn is slightly easier and more 'interesting'.)

Once you have reached the street level of Bukchon Hanok Village, you will be presented with bird-eye view of Samcheongdong. From there, you can continue on your left to Bukchon Museum Old Fragrance; or onto your right to the most popular street of Bukchon Hanok Village (i.e. Bukchon-ro 11-gil, 5 mins walk).
